Import Export Code (IEC)

The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), an arm of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in India. It is a mandatory requirement for individuals and businesses engaged in the import and export of goods and services from India. The IEC is used for customs clearance and is necessary for all export and import transactions.

Here’s how to obtain an Import Export Code (IEC) in India:

1. Eligibility:
•   IEC can be obtained by businesses, individuals, another
entities that are involved in international trade and wish to engage in import and export activities.
2. Application Form:
•You need to fill out the IEC application form, known as “ANF 2A,” which is available on the DGFT website (https://dgft.gov.in/).
3. Required Documents:
•Gather the necessary documents to submit along with the application. The exact documents required may vary depending on your type of business, but common documents include:
•Proof of legal entity (e.g., business registration certificate).
•PAN (Permanent Account Number) card.
•Bank certificate or canceled cheque.
•Passport-sized photographs of the applicant.
•Address proof (e.g., Aadhar card, passport, electricity bill).
•Import Export Code fee payment receipt.
•Any additional documents requested by DGFT.
4. Digital Signature:
•Some categories of applicants may require a digital signature certificate for online filing. Check the DGFT website for the latest requirements.
5. Fee Payment:
•Pay the applicable fee for obtaining the IEC. The fee structure can be found on the DGFT website.
6. Submit Application:
•Submit the completed application form along with the required documents and proof of fee payment to the nearest DGFT office or upload it online, depending on the submission process in your region.
7. Verification and Approval:
•DGFT may conduct a verification process to ensure the authenticity of the information provided in the application.
8. Issuance of IEC:
•Upon approval, DGFT will issue the 10-digit Import Export Code.
9. Record Keeping:
•Maintain proper records and documentation related to all import and export transactions, as required by law.
10. Use of IEC:
-You can now use the IEC for customs clearance and documentation in all your import and export transactions.
11. Renewal:
-The Import Export Code does not have an expiry date and remains valid unless surrendered or canceled. There is no need for annual renewal.
